At Kesslers London and Proportion London, our passion for sustainability is driving real change in the retail industry. We believe that innovation and responsibility should go hand in hand, and we’re committed to making a lasting impact, not just through words, but through meaningful action.
The Challenge: Retail’s Environmental Impact
The retail industry, like the world around it, has evolved significantly, and it continues to do so at an accelerated pace. However, we can’t ignore the environmental damage caused by frequent store fit-outs, ever-changing designs, and the use of unsustainable materials.
One of the biggest obstacles to creating sustainable in-store experiences is the hesitation to embrace new materials and methods. A lack of understanding, combined with a fear of change, often results in retailers sticking to outdated practices, perpetuating a cycle of waste and harm to our planet.
At Kesslers London and Proportion London, we see sustainability as an opportunity, not a challenge. By rethinking traditional approaches, we can create inspiring retail spaces that are both innovative and environmentally responsible.
What Needs to Change?
For retail to have a sustainable future, we must address key issues that are holding back progress:
- Overuse of Fibreglass
Fibreglass has long been a go-to material in retail due to its durability and flexibility. However, it comes with a major downside, it’s non-recyclable. Once a fibreglass product reaches the end of its life, it goes straight to landfill, where it remains indefinitely. - High Carbon Footprints from Global Sourcing
Retail displays, shop windows, and pop-ups often rely on materials and products that are manufactured overseas. The extensive transportation required to move these items across the world significantly increases carbon emissions. - Frequent Turnover & Waste
Retail is a fast-moving, creative industry that thrives on reinvention. However, each new season, trend, or campaign leads to the disposal of large quantities of materials, many of which are not recyclable.
Our Solution: EcoForm – A New Era of Sustainable Retail
Addressing these challenges required a fresh approach, which is exactly how EcoForm was born.
- A Mannequin with a Circular Life
EcoForm is a fully recyclable and biodegradable mannequin, handcrafted by the experts at Proportion London. Unlike traditional fibreglass mannequins, which contribute to landfill waste, EcoForm is made from eco-friendly materials designed to break down naturally leaving no long-term impact on the environment. What sets EcoForm apart is its versatility. While many “eco-friendly” mannequins can only be recycled into more mannequins, EcoForm’s materials can be transformed into entirely new products. This is a true circular solution, as independently verified by Biffa.
Local Manufacturing, Lower Carbon Footprint
We are incredibly proud that both Kesslers London and Proportion London operate from our London-based factory. This allows us to source materials locally and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our products. By delivering directly from East London, we eliminate the need for multiple international transport links, making our supply chain more sustainable.
Beyond Mannequins: A Future of Sustainable Store Fit-Outs
EcoForm was designed to be more than just mannequins. Our goal is to expand its application to other elements of store fit-outs, offering retailers a sustainable alternative for shop fixtures, displays, and more. This shift will allow for greater recyclability and reduce waste across the high street.
EcoForm is also partnered with Evertreen to combat deforestation. For every 1 EcoForm made, 1 tree will be planted.
